Early start today as I had a lot of miles to cover. I went over to the motel office, only to find out there was no breakfast included with the stay. That, combined with the lack of wifi, made it a fairly costly stay considering. The owners had.only just taken over and were pretty confused at the whole thing. Nevertheless, I let them take a picture with me as the first foreigner they had seemingly met!
Todays ride has a few more ups and downs, making it more interesting to ride. I spent most of the day on the highways as it kept me to a fairly straight course to Michigan city.
Along most of the highways around Indiana the hard shoulder is very wide to accommodate the Amish carts. This made it fairly safe and easy to ride along, that is, until I got stuck behind one for a short distance (note to self: you can't draft Amish horse-drawn carts). I also saw a lot more Amish riding bicycles, including one man grooming his beard whilst riding a recumbent bike. Now I have seen it all!
I stopped for lunch at a Subway in Elkhart, pulled pork sub with lots of salad please! The town then led into Southbend, not the safest feeling city though so I didn't stop anywhere. Instead I got back on the US 20 which would take me all the way to Michigan city in a fairly straight route.
After a little confusion on the road I was aiming for (there are two of the same name that join at a T-junction) I finally found my next host, Kevin, and his house. There I also met Louis, a Dutch touring cyclist who was also staying the night. We all enjoyed a lamb chop dinner with Kevin's family, and talked about the many differences between English, American and Dutch laws, especially when it comes to gun laws. All the while, a mother and father robin were back and forth feeding their 3 young in a next up on a shelf under their porch! They'll be ready to fly off soon we thought.
An interesting day of riding and meeting new people! I'm now another hour behind, having crossed timezones earlier in the day at some point. Tomorrow I may venture the 4 miles north of here just to cross into Michigan state (Michigan city is in Indiana still) before following the lake round to Chicago!
Miles today: 102.1
Total miles: 840.1
