Doughnuts for breakfast! More pastries and hot chocolate, with some orange juice and cereal to start the day at the motel. Then it was back on the good old straight US 30 for a bit.
I stopped at a petrol station for lunch where they had a knock-off subways. I ordered a BLT 6-inch sub and after the young (and rather bored looking) server had put the bacon onto my roll she then asked "what else do you want on there?". "Well, some lettuce and tomato would be nice", I replied. Somehow I don't think she'd grasped what BLT stood for.
Just after Denison I left my companion, the US 30, behind and headed out on smaller roads the rest of the way to Onawa. It got a bit more hilly, but the surroundings were beautiful. It almost reminded me of riding in the countryside back in the UK. A lot of the hills look like the famous 'Bliss' photograph taken for the Windows XP desktop background, though a bit of Googling tells me that hill is actually in California (I might have to detour as it's very close to my route!)
The air is definitely getting drier the further west I go. I find myself wanting to drink more, even if the day doesn't feel as hot. I'm going to have to stock up on a lot of water by the time I reach Salt Lake City and the Bonneville salt flats!
I checked into the Super 8 here in Onawa and as I don't have anywhere to ride to tomorrow I went for a super healthy 'Air Force 5 chicken wing special' at a local restaurant called Michael's, washed down with a Budweiser. Fully fried, cheap, tacky, but filling.
I'm now on the very edge of Iowa, just a stones throw from my next state to cross, Nebraska. The Ragbrai festival that I mentioned the other day usually takes 7 days to cross the state. I've done it in 4 ish days with a duff ankle, pretty good going, though granted it's not the same route. There's not a whole lot in Onawa, so tomorrow is going to be a proper lazy rest day!
Miles today: 74.1
Total miles: 1437.8
