Doughnuts for breakfast as the motel only provides tea and coffee (it is a cheap one though!). I was on the road around 8:30 and again the morning was a slightly cold one. I thought Nevada was supposed to be hot!
As I left Wells, I thought to myself "7 days to go, but I'm not out of the woods yet". Not much later I passed signed to 'Deeth Starr Valley'. Spooky!
I stopped in Elko with 20 miles left to go. I was hungry so went for a Wendy's as it was just off the route. There I had their 'Strawberry fields chicken salad', which was an odd combination of chicken, bacon and strawberries in a salad with an apple balsamic dressing. Still, at least it was some vegetables! Just outside, a young pair of guys stopped to ask about my bike. One of them used to work in a bike shop and he said how Pinerellos were good bikes. When I told him it had got me here from New York City, he called me crazy but also said "props to you man"!
In the afternoon the headwind built up again, and ahead of me a storm was crossing the freeway. I got caught by a few drops of rain, but luckily it passed by without much problem.
With 15 miles left, I encountered some roadworks where they were resurfacing the road and making repairs to a tunnel. I tried riding on the diversion but it was very narrow, with no real shoulder. After a couple of buses passed very close by, I jumped across the central divide and back onto the now empty side of the freeway. One oversized load on that narrow diversion would've taken my head off, and thats a part of my anatomy I've become rather fond of.
When I reached the tunnel, the diversion went around the mountain along the service road. It was slightly longer but after sneaking my way through a closed road where the workers had some.equipment parked I actually ended up on the service road into Carlin.
Once checked into the motel, I went out in search of food. I first tried a small local cafe, but they only had expensive sandwiches or meatloaf for dinner. Not something I fancied. I walked around a bit in search of a Mexican restaurant but unfortunately I couldn't find it, and had to settle for another Chinese, 'Chins cafe'. It was good and quick though, and nice and cheap!
I've decided that instead of doing two short rides over the next couple of days, I'll combine them into one (its mostly downhill!) to put me a day ahead. I can then either have an extra day in San Fran, or take an extra rest day somewhere if I need it. That means only 6 days of riding left!
Miles today: 73.7
Total miles: 2736.6
