Day 38: Lovelock to Reno

Of the four tubes I patched last night, only one stayed inflated overnight. Arrgh!

I got rolling by 8am after some ready made porridge sachets I'd snagged from one of the previous motels. Enough to get me going!
The ride along the I-80 was a fairly nice.one today. With barely any wind it felt like downhill the whole way, yet I somehow ended up 600ft higher than where I started!

Along the side of the road I saw something a bit new. It looked like a rabbit with really big ears sticking straight up. A bit of Googling later told me this was a 'black-tailed jackrabbit', fairly common to Western American desert areas.

The freeway became a little busier after I stopped in Fernley for some lunch. It was joined by another highway, and so there was more traffic than the quieter interstate of the previous few days. Still a nice wide shoulder to cycle on though. A lot of people are around in Reno over the next few days as they're heading to 'Burning Man', an annual week long arts festival out in the black rock desert. Its a huge event, bringing in some 50,000 people, so I've got to watch out on the roads, but I'm glad I'm now off the freeway (with the exception of a quick couple of miles tomorrow afternoon).

My hosts for this evening are all relatively recent graduates of the university of Nevada, which is just a short walk from their house. They have a nice garden with apples, pears, peaches and tomatoes all growing that they said I can help myself to. They gave me some spaghetti to cook (yay pasta, finally!) and took me to the shops for supplies for the next few days. We sat around with their housemates and had a couple of beers before turning in for the night. Its the start of college next week, so there are a lot of freshmen walking around Reno before the start of their studies, hopefully not too noisy!

Tomorrow I reach my final state, California! I've got an interesting ride ahead of me, with some fairly big climbs and beautiful scenery to look forward to apparently.

Miles today: 97.1
Total miles: 3011.1
