Day 20: Onawa to Norfolk

I got up after sleeping in the same bed a second night for the first time in last 20 days and went for breakfast, some porridge and waffles, at the motel. The weather was quite foggy and it had rained quite a lot overnight.

Luckily, I managed to avoid the rain and thunder and the weather was cooler but very humid today (Nebraska flavoured air soup). The sun appeared every so often from between the clouds which helped to burn off some of the humidity.

Once I joined the 275 highway, I was given a wonderfully wide and perfectly smooth shoulder to ride on. The road has recently been relaid which made it very quick and easy to ride on. A lot of the countryside today wouldn't have looked out of place in the UK.

This was my first ride without support tape since spraining my ankle a few days back. It seems to have healed quite well but I'm still taking it a bit easy as its still a bit sore if I stretch it a lot. A couple more days and I'm sure it'll be back to full strength again.

I reached Norfolk pretty early at 1:30, having averaged 15.3 mph today. I seem to be getting faster! I joined the 'Levee trail' for a short while to my hosts, Jon and Karina's, apartment. They live and work on the 'Northeast Community College' campus. Karina sings opera (my second stay with an opera singer!) so after showering I went to listen to her sing a short excerpt for a video they're making for the college.

The evening's entertainment was disc golf! Basically golf with different shaped Frisbees as the 'clubs'. I've never played before, but it was a lot of fun! Plenty of walking too and nice to explore one of Norfolk's parks. Afterwards we went for dinner at 'Barnstormers' where I had a 'Big boyz mac and cheese' with sweet potato waffles and onion rings. Very filling and very tastey! The restaurant is based on the Norfolk airport boundary and is filled with aircraft and antique car parts.

Tomorrow, I'll join the start of the 'Cowboy trail' that will lead me all the to Atkinson and up to Valentine the next day. Easy navigation and safe from the highways!

Miles today: 70.9
Total miles: 1508.7
