Day 29: Rawlins to Rock Springs

I woke up to a photo of me in the local paper back home, which was lovely to see (thanks Hazel for getting there first!) Teri, my host, and her son Nick made me cantaloupe melon and cactus fruit for breakfast. The cactus fruit was interesting, quite like an appley taste but with the texture of a pear, with large seeds in. Something new!

It was a cold and rainy start to the day, and I started out on my first bit of (legal) interstate route down the I-80. The wind continued to make progress difficult, so I had my hands in the drops and my body low to try to reduce my.surface area. The first half of the day was less hilly and so I could make some progress, though it was going to be another slow day.
The sun didn't come out until I stopped for lunch at a services in 'Wamsutter' 40 miles down the road. More odd looks from the drivers, I guess they don't see many cyclists around here.

I wasn't on the road again for long, only about 9 miles, before I had to stop again. Another of those pesky metal staples had punctured my rear tyre again but luckily there was a junction nearby so I could get off the interstate to change it. Another half an hour lost, I really hate Wyomings roads!

At one point along the I-80, a small Cessna came flying fast and low overhead. It turned and came round for another look at me and I waved on its second pass. The pilot must've been having some fun at that speed.

With 30 miles left the interstate started to descend and I tried my best to dodge any and every bit of debris at the side of the road whilst counting off the mile signs, singing (sometimes in my head, sometimes out loud):

99 miles left to go on the road
99 miles left to go
You take one down, pedal around
98 miles left to go on the road!

Insanity may be starting to take grip.

I arrived into Rock Springs and made my way across town to my next host's (Rick's) house. He had two other touring cyclists staying tonight and the apartment was full of bikes! I went to get a Chinese takeout and we exchanged stories about our rides so far. They're heading in the opposite direction, with the wind, much more sensible! Rick laughed at the sight of me doing my tour on a part carbon road bike, but was impressed with my rack setup and the distances I'd done over the past few days.

Another long ride tomorrow, but with the extra distance across Rock Springs today it should be just less than 100 miles. Still hoping for less wind though! Less than 1000 miles left to run now!

Miles today: 112.4
Total miles: 2272.0
