Day 25: Crawford to Lusk

Last night, shortly after I went to bed, a very big thunderstorm rolled in and made getting to sleep a bit tricky. But at least I was inside! I started the day with some unhealthy but sugar filled doughnuts for breakfast. It wasn't a long ride today so I decided to set off a bit later and take my time. The thunderstorm had knocked out the internet so I couldn't check in with home or check the weather either, and there was no mobile signal in the state park either, I was cut off from the technological world!

On the porch of the lodge a friendly old couple got chatting and told me about their nephew who was apparently a world champ in his age category (over 40's) on a mountain bike. They also donated $5 to my cause and wished me luck on the rest of the journey through Wyoming.

I set off and aimed to find wifi in the next town, but all day I only passed through two tiny towns, one called 'Van Tassell' only had a population of 15! I worried my mother somewhat, and I got a call from her on my American phone once I reached some signal. Sorry mum! I had to take a small detour at the start of the ride to avoid the bison enclosure that wasn't signposted from the road, but it didn't take me far off course.

As I crossed the boarder into Wyoming the shoulder immediately disappeared and the road surface worsened. It seems Wyoming doesn't look after its roads as well as the other states. Luckily it was very quiet along the rest of the highway, so I was able to ride along the white line easy enough.

I arrived at Lusk just after 2 pm with no storms today. I've been climbing steadily for the past few days and I'm now over 5000ft up, higher than any point in the UK! When I got to the motel reception there was nobody in to check me in, but about 10 minutes later someone finally arrived and I found my room.

For dinner I went a short walk down the road to a small restaurant where they had a buffet. Something I've learnt: buffets are dangerous.... soooo much food! But I'll need it for tomorrow's long ride to Casper.

Miles today: 56.4
Total miles: 1924.8
