Day 37: Winnemucca to Lovelock

I started off the day fixing a slow leak puncture on my rear tyre that had gone down overnight. I thought it was getting a little squishy towards the end of yesterday's ride. Afterwards, I headed to Walmart on the edge of town in search of another spare because I hate patching tubes!

Not a lot really happened on today's ride. It was relatively flat the whole way, and the road surface was pretty smooth too, making it actually quite boring! The only challenge really was the strong head wind and gusts. There were quite a few dust devils today in between the mountains that the freeway skirted between. On one occasion one gust nearly knocked me off my bike and I had to put my feet down to stay on the shoulder!

Something caught my eye as I got closer to Lovelock; someone had dropped an iPod nano and it sat on the edge of the tarmac looking slightly run over. No battery so I couldn't check who it belonged to, but I'll be interested to see if it will charge and if I can trace the owner.

With just 3 miles left on the interstate and 10 miles to Lovelock, I found another thin piece of metal this time lodged in my front tyre. I pulled it out and heard the hiss of air telling me it was puncture time again. At least the front is a little easier to change. It was also lucky I'd bought a spare at Walmart this morning!

I reached the 'Cadillac motel' as my last motel stay before San Francisco. The old lady at the front desk said "you look like you've been on a bike", then looked out of the window at my bike, "oh you have!". She was very kind and together with the couple who arrived just after me interrogated me about my trip.

In my room I started patching up my spare tubes as I'd now run out of completely intact ones and theres no bike shop or Walmart in town. After showering off the mess I walked into town to find some food. Unfortunately, the local BBQ place had recently closed and the only two other options were a burger cafe or a Mexican cafe (or McDonalds, not really a choice though). I headed back past the motel, got caught by a shower of rain on the way, and went to the casino restaurant over the road. The restaurant was actually fairly fancy for such a small town, and I had a salmon fillet with rice and veg with garlic toast and a side salad, and a slice of pecan pie for dessert for a little over $20. It was yum and certainly a change from the processed food I'd been having over the past few days.

I headed back to the motel room to finish up and test the tubes I'd patched earlier. I'll leave them overnight to see if any still have slow leaks and can be used as emergency spares.

4 days and 350 miles to go!

Miles today: 72.5
Total miles: 2914.0
